Texas Scaregrounds - Kennedale, TX

OVERALL SCORE : 8

Date : Friday, October 5th

Time : 10:00pm

Visibility/Location :
Located directly off Business 287/Mansfield Hwy south of I-20, the Texas Scaregrounds should be easy to see, just look for the search light.

Parking :
There is ample free parking in the grassy area behind the scare grounds including security personnel.

Atmosphere/Wait Entertainment : 5
The area outside the haunted attractions does not appear very spooky or themed, but bare and industrial. There are two large warehouses marked with the haunt’s signage, and the search light in the middle. There is also loud music and a concession area. You might see some of the haunt characters roaming around the area, and they will probably stop to entertain you for a moment, but you still don’t get the real haunt feeling until you go inside one of the metal buildings.

Set Design/Detail/Floor Plan : 8
The details put into each scene are noticeable and wonderful, and even some of the halls hold a few of our favorite touches. Some of the rooms even have a themed scent to go along with the experience. Yes, I said a scent. Nifty, huh? However, the details are not consistent throughout, as there were several blank walls and hanging sheets where there could have been more details and spooky accents added. We also found ourselves questioning our direction or looking for a path. There were many times where the only guide was an arrow painted on the blank wall. This was because the wall layout became so awkward at times, we found ourselves in actor areas, or just simply going the wrong way. Since Chaos is in a new building, and because they do have so many very detailed areas inside the haunt, we assume that more details will spread through the haunt in the future years as they grow. Since this is a lengthy haunt, it will take a lot of time to fully decorate the entire walk-through, but this effort will greatly enhance the mood and haunt essence for each scene with smooth and decorative transitions in the halls and scene exits.

Live Actors Performance/Enthusiasm/Costumes : 7.5
We saw a large number of very young actors, some people yelling at us to “get out”, three or four very interesting and creepy characters, but overall nothing too incredible to set Chaos apart from the rest. There were a few instances where we felt there should have been more characters in certain areas, or the characters that were there had missed their cues. I cannot say that anyone did a bad job, just very average, and very typical of a traditional haunted house.

We had previously walked through Chaos on opening night just to take pictures, but were supposedly not given the “real show” since it was just for photos. However, there were a few scenes where there were more actors, better characters, and more lively performances given on the “not the real show night”—and then on the “real review night” we were wondering where those great characters went that we saw the week before… I personally wanted to see them all again, this time in full action, and I was a little disappointed to have missed their performances.

Additional Attractions : 8
Nightmares and Asylum are good additional attractions and worth the combo.

Admission Price vs. Length Entertainment Value: 8.5
At around 25 minutes, Chaos is longer than most haunted attractions. We highly recommend you print the Internet Coupon (http://www.dfwhauntedhouses.com/coupons/TSG_coupon.jpg) - $3 off combo ticket and enjoy all the attractions while you are there.

Overall Experience/Summary :
Chaos has a great potential to one day become the biggest, longest, and best haunted house in the DFW area. They could use more decoration through the halls that are between scenes, and probably need more actors with a real ‘character’ developed to provide more interaction with the patrons, instead of just screaming at them. I am excited to see what Chaos comes up with next, and I am anxious to see how much they grow in the future as they settle into their new permanent home. Due to their size, it will take a lot of work, even more staff, and a great amount of dedication and effort to make this place what it has the potential to be. I have no doubt that the Chaos crew will certainly bring forth their talents and keep building on.
