Visibility/Location:
Hangman’s House of Horrors is located right off of I-30 and Forest Park. The location is very easy to get to, and there are plenty of signs leading the way. Just look for the huge gorilla on top of Hangman’s House of Horrors which is easily seen from I-30.
Parking:
Parking at Hangman’s House of Horrors is free and located across the street in a designated parking area. The area has both ample lighting and nearby security.
Atmosphere/Wait Entertainment: 9
The overall atmosphere outside Hangman’s feels has more of a carnival-like feeling to it than a scary haunted house. You can hear live music coming from the main stage, sounds of horrible singing coming from the Karaoke area, the smell of concession food, and see characters such as the Hangman himself roaming the grounds.
Set Design/Detail/Floor Plan: 9
The theme for this year’s Hangman’s House of Horror is the city of Fort Worth and its area attractions, recreations, and businesses – AND the Hangman is loose. Each scene stays relatively close to the overall theme exceptionally well. During your visit, you walk through several twisted versions of Fort Worth areas which include scenes such as the Fort Worth ‘Batts’ Performance Hall, ‘Boo-tanical’ Gardens, the Fort Worth ‘Stalk’ Yards, and even local industry such as ‘Mockheed’ Industries. The Fort Worth theme remains very consistent throughout Hangman’s House of Horrors, and we love themes. If you are a Fort Worth local or at least familiar with the area attractions, then the scenes and jokes will make more sense for you. For people not too familiar with Fort Worth, some of the jokes and scenes may be a bit out of the ordinary or out of place, and this might ruin the overall experience if the flow feels broken for you. Born and raised in Fort Worth, I loved it and found it to be clever, imaginative, and refreshing.
Live Actors Performance/Enthusiasm/Costumes: 7
There is a vast mix of characters within Hangman’s House of Horror. Some of the actors are absolutely fabulous, while several leave something to be desired. Bad timing, or absolutely zero interaction where there should be causes this area to get marked down. It is a shame that the upbeat, enthusiastic, and exciting characters sparsely spread within could not give some of their fellow haunters some acting lessons on how it should be done, because there were a few really great performers. I understand that it could be difficult to find a lot of talented people to work in a haunt, but some of the people might have just needed some guidance and coaching to improve their show.
Crowd Control : 8
Hangman’s assigns group numbers to each ticketing group, and then you do not stand in line until your group number shows up on screen. This allows people to roam the area and see other attractions while they wait instead of spending the entire night in line. However, once your number is called you will still wait in line, first outside, and then inside. Maybe they should have smaller numbers of people in the groups, and then just change that group number frequently.
On a normal night group size going into Hangman’s House of Horrors is between 15 and 20 people. For the type of attraction that Hangman’s is we feel that this group size is way too large. Sending this many people through a haunt with narrow passages will normally cause the actors to either jump at the first person in line, or wait until the end to react. Thankfully since we arrived shortly after they opened and it was a little bit slow we were able to go in as a group of 7. Seeing Hangman’s in a small group is a really different experience then it is with a large group of 20+. We HIGHLY suggest that if you are planning on going to Hangman’s House of Horrors then arrive EARLY. This can really make a huge difference in your experience at Hangman’s.
Additional Attractions : 9
Hangman’s has some of the better side attractions out of most haunts in the DFW area. Along with 3 other haunted attractions there are nightly live music and karaoke shows. The 3 additional haunts includes the 3d Funhouse, The Catacombs, and the Hillbillies of the Trinity.
The 3-D Funhouse is exactly what the name implies. You are given 2 different pairs of glasses when you walk into the 3-D Funhouse and are instructed to change glasses at the midway point of the house. While having no actors or anything that is going to jump out and scare you, there are several really cool 3-D type effects including spider webs, a slanted dining area, and a coral reef.
The second of the three side attractions is the Catacombs. The Catacombs attraction is basically just a chain link fence maze with flashing strobe lights, roaming actors, and it is enclosed in a dark tent. Although plain, this is still fun for people who like mazes.
The third and final is actually the best of the additional attractions at Hangman’s House of Horrors. Hillbillies of the Trinity is not scary and is meant to be more comical than your typical haunted attraction. In the Hillbillies of the Trinity, you are taking a tour through the lives of your typical Hillbilly backwoods, moonshining family’s trailer complete with a port-a-potty entrance and moonshine distillery out back.
Admission Price vs. Length Entertainment Value: 10
Hangman’s main attraction takes approximately 25 to 30 minutes to walk through. For a low cost of $16.00, the time that you spend inside of Hangman’s House of Horrors is well worth the admission price. You can purchase a combo ticket for $20.00 or VIP front of the line access for $30.00. The $4.00 extra for the combo ticket is more than worth it, even if you only see the Hillbillies of the Trinity for the stereotypical strangeness and great actor interaction. But the 3-D Funhouse and The Catacombs are also fun to go through, so go ahead and get that combo ticket.
Overall Experience/Summary:
We really enjoyed the Hangman’s House of Horrors theme this year. Being native to Fort Worth, this was a nice added bonus to see someone take the Fort Worth area and make it more interesting, while also showing off our town attractions. All of the attractions at Hangman’s were enjoyable and we suggest all the Fort Worth natives out there to check this one out, if anything to see the witty twists made for each Fort Worth landmark.
