Visibility/Location:
Just off FM 1187 and Bennet Lawson in Mansfield, Phantasm's Screampark is fairly easy to notice.
Parking:
$2.00 parking in the grassy area beside the Screampark.
Atmosphere/Wait Entertainment: 8
Although Phantasm’s Screampark is located almost directly off 1187, it seems like it is out in the middle of nowhere. Once you pull into the grounds, it feels like you have entered into haunted country backwoods, surrounded by brush and dust, and the 5 different attractions. Sights and sounds combined create a wonderfully spooky aura around and throughout the grounds. Although, it could be the real haunting (per paranormal researchers) within some of the haunt trailers that creates that eerie mood.
Set Design/Detail/Floor Plan: 8.5
Phantasms offers a little bit of everything…
Dr. Meads Circus of Madmen and Monsters contains your clowns and circus funhouse theme, the Haunted Mead Manor provides the classic ‘BOO House’ traditional walk through, the Haunted Egyptian Temple of Anubis takes you into the dark sides of ancient Egypt, the Nightmare in the House of Wax makes your skin crawl with a guided wax museum tour, and finally the Pirates of the Scarribean is more of a child friendly area with skeletal pirate scenes and less scares for the little ones to warm up with.
Each of the attractions are crafted in a way that speaks volumes to the owner’s passion and dedication to the haunt season. Phantasms Screampark is a smaller scale haunted attraction in comparison, but they are growing a little bit more every year. Primarily built from previously owned trailer homes, there is an odd sense of creepiness in the air throughout each haunt. Nightmare in the House of Wax in particular has been researched and has a long list of different sightings and experiences of owners and crew, including areas where none of the actors will keep working in due to ‘strange things’ happening. It is interesting to see how some of the original rooms in the trailers have been put to use, while other areas were built from scratch. While Mead Manor has some very nice props, Nightmare in the House of Wax has handmade wax creations, as well as authentic caskets, embalming equipment, autopsy tables, and even human remains. Next door, the Temple of Anubis also has a handmade work of art that is probably the best prop we’ve ever seen… One word – Hellraiser.
Live Actors Performance/Enthusiasm/Costumes: 7
Dr. Meads Circus of Madmen and Monsters is the proud home of one of the most energetic and flamboyant clown you will ever see. By himself, he makes this short circus trip worth a visit. Even though we arrived rather late, we were amazed how much enthusiastic bounciness he still had after such a long eventful evening.
Haunted Mead Manor features some very young girls with very loud screams, their tormentors, and of course a mad pig man. Since the girls are so young, it is slightly distracting, but at the same time they are great at portraying their roles and sticking to them. This haunt could have used more live actors, as well as Haunted Egyptian Temple of Anubis. There seemed to be some missing bodies in the Temple.
Nightmare in the House of Wax also does not have very many actors. You have your beautiful tour guide, and then Phantasm’s most noteworthy character – Leatherface. He will measure you and then chase you through the museum.
Crowd Control :
Phantasm's Screampark uses a neat armband with tear-off numbers to enter each attraction. We have not encountered huge crowds here before, but due to the size of the attractions, the groups should remain small. Nightmare in the House of Wax is a guided tour, so this means that groups will not run into one another since there is only one guide.
Additional Attractions : 7.5
Phantasm's Screampark consists of five small attractions: Haunted Mead Manor, Haunted Egyptian Temple of Anubis, Nightmare in the House of Wax, Dr. Meads Circus of Madmen and Monsters, and Pirates of the Scarribean.
Admission Price vs. Length Entertainment Value: 7.5
Each of the attractions are fairly short, averaging 2 to 5 minutes each (except for Mead Manor which is the longest at about 7 minutes), and one of the attractions is more directed toward younger crowds. In comparison to other haunts in the DFW area, the price is very fair, competitive, and worth what you get… although it may not FEEL like it since the haunts are short, I promise the total amount of time evens out with similarly priced haunted attractions and the price is reasonable.
