Visibility/Location :
Slaughterhouse is located at the corner of Lamar and McKinney next to the Historic Dallas West End. Look for the skull with the flashing eyes.
Parking :
Being downtown, there are not very many free places to park. The closest parking lot is located right next to Slaughterhouse and costs $5.00.
Atmosphere/Wait Entertainment : 5
Being located in the heart of downtown, there is not much atmosphere a haunted house can create. Slaughterhouse is located right next to the Dallas Police Station. Inside the Slaughterhouse doors is a small interior queue line with a horror movie playing on the television. The unmasked actors on break on the side of the haunt and the crickets roaming around outside is the entire atmosphere you get.
Set Design/Scene Detail/Floor Plan : 8.5
The owner and operator of Slaughterhouse has been very busy over the last year adding more décor to the walls and halls throughout. We were glad to see this additional care and detail put into it, and there is still room for even more touches. There are some very nice props inside Slaughterhouse, although some of the animatronics were off on the timing so they did not move until we already passed. The walkthrough is easy to follow, but I wonder if there is a way to reorganize the floor plan to add more length to the haunt. Even some added character interaction could delay scenes and make the overall seem as though it is longer.
Live Actors/Performance/Enthusiasm/Costumes : 7.5
I still feel like that Slaughterhouse could use more actors to add more live interaction and delay the walk through time with characters who will improvise with the guests. There were characters, but no real interaction. The more energetic actors are found toward the end of the haunt, including a crazy doctor and a chainsaw wielding maniac. Everyone did okay, but there was still a sense that something was “missing”. I expected the doctor to come toward us begging for help, or at least one person to have some sort of speaking part.
Crowd Control : 9
Group sizes range from 4 to 6 people. Groups do not appear to be rushed and while we were going through the Slaughterhouse we did not catch up to other groups or have a group bump into us. On a crowded night, I could see this easily changing though since there is very little wait area for the line.
Additional Attractions : N/A
What you see is what you get… Slaughterhouse.
Admission Price vs. Length vs. Entertainment Value : 4
Admission to Slaughterhouse is $15.00 and a $1.00 off coupon can be found online here at DFWHauntedHouses.com or on the Official Slaughterhouse web site. This is a little bit expensive considering the average time to walk through the haunt is around 5 minutes. We normally see a trend of haunt owners charging roughly $1-$2 per minute for haunted attractions, depending on the type of attraction and midway grounds are available. Since this averages at $3 per minute and there are no additional attractions, we have to score this area low.
