Set Design/Detail/Floor Plan
The Acres of Fear Hayride is very short. You can’t even call it half an acre. The path goes out to a tree covered area, turns around, and then comes back through the same path. The good news is that Acres of Fear has made some major improvements and added decorations since last year. Having things hanging down over the trailer from the trees is a nice addition that might startle a few people not expecting things to touch them.
Live Actors (Performance/Enthusiasm/Costumes)
There are quite a few more actors this year, too - at least 8 or 9 that we saw. The actors come up to the trailer and bang the side with sticks and chainsaws, and everyone seems to have a good role in trying to startle unsuspecting patrons. The addition of a headless horseman trotting around the end was a great touch, too.
Admission Price vs. Length (Entertainment Value)
The hayride barely lasts 5 minutes. Although there is more stuff to see this year, the length and path of the ride has not changed. This is a nice little side attraction to get you started, or maybe to finish off the night. But as a standalone feature, it requires a longer path, more work, and a lot more interaction.
Overall Experience/Summary/Misc. Information
Hayrides are hard to pull off in a way that really scares people. Acres of Fear is making a good attempt and has improved a lot since last year, but it is unfortunately still too short, and thus does not provide enough space or time for the actors to really startle anyone. Almost as soon as you take off, you turn around and come back again. We like the idea of having a hayride at a multi-haunt attraction, but Acres of Fear has a lot more growing to do in order to satisfy the masses.
